We are not the first to design protective clothing for seniors, we are the first to do it right.  Zanthion's manifesto of senior dignity translates into every aspect of our engineering.  We seek to provide function with exceptional beauty.  Our protective senior clothing line starts with the notion that clothes should be beautiful, easy to put on and take off, comfortable to wear, stain resistant,  require no ironing, and provide protection for the hips, knees, coccyx, elbows, and shoulders.  We used the most advanced impact distributing elastomeric material available in the market; the same material protecting professional football players and motorcyclists.

History of Design

We started our design of senior protective clothing, like many companies before us, looking at undergarment protection.  We discovered that seniors did not choose to wear undergarment protection for several reasons:

  • Difficult to put on and take off
  • Hot in warm weather
  • Not complimentary to the figure
  • Expensive for the value delivered

More importantly, we found many things wrong with the protective design and materials being used.  Impact protection requires a distribution of the force.  In general, most companies have chosen to provide padding rather than look at the actual physics of distributing impact.  For that reason their designs focus a small amount of thick material directly around the assumed impact area.  Impact come in many forms and complete protection requires that the material distribute the impact from whatever direction it occurs.

Designing for Impact

Zanthion focused our designs on the wearing of traditional clothing with no extra steps required for dressing and undressing.  Additionally, we focused our designs on the distribution of impact force over a larger area protecting seniors form falls that are directionally inconvenient.  Lastly, we focused our designs on scalability and fashion.  We wanted to make sure that we could move our designs into fashions that were appealing to seniors.  The result of our protective designs are a thinner less visible enhanced protection.

Elostomeric Impact Science

Material science is one of those fields advancing at leaps and bounds. When concussions became the focus of huge lawsuits in the NFL industry stepped up to mitigate the impact damage to the brain. The best impact absorbing materials are called Elastomers. Modern day elastomers behave like a liquid on impact creating a hydraulic force through the inside of the material. Zanthion uses two materials shown in the next two sections.

XRD® Technology

XRD® Technology was engineered to meet the demand for a protective padding that performs in the most intense conditions, while still being comfortable, lightweight, flexible, soft and most importantly - add a dynamic, distinctive look to new product designs.

Sorbothane

Sorbothane is a proprietary, visco-elastic polymer. Sorbothane® is a thermoset, polyether-based, polyurethane material. In addition to being visco-elastic, Sorbothane® also has a very high damping coefficient. Sorbothane® combines shock absorption, good memory, vibration isolation and vibration damping characteristics.

Designing for Comfort

Designing for comfort is a critical part of our design process. We wanted to make sure that the materials we used in the clothes themselves breathed well and felt comfortable. Our design team scoured the web for the clothes that seniors chose over all others. We found that elastic waist bands were extremely important as well as stain resistant fabrics. We also chose to adopt cloth that minimized ironing.
